mmd_as – web2 spots and FLACs

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

The new mmd_as album has made its way around the wide world of web 2.0 and made its sounds available for free where it went. Probably only two places of note are mmd_as – last.fm and here on the Renoise Forum where some people have given comment. Everything else out there is either too minor or so messy that it’s un-presentable. However, if any discussion of note appears I shall share it here. If I were more the virtual-social-butterfly my reach may have generated more of an impact, but no use in pretending to be something I’m not. One place that I’ll be endeavouring to polish up for networking purposes is a new Facebook Page that at the moment just barely features the mmd_as material.

The good news is that I’ve added the new album to the mmd shop, available as a high quality FLAC download for a realistic $10AUD via paypal. Again, we wish that this could be a physical copy of a CD with cool artwork and such, but for now a FLAC version will have to do. Think of your purchase as a ’show of support’ as any donations are halved between Alex and I. I don’t expect a heap of interested (my last album only sold about 5-6 copies), but we’ll put the option there for you just in case.

And of course, any comments and reactions from yourselves to the album would be most welcome to us. Please lets us know what you think of what we have done!

Read more about the project on the album page.
I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Alex Strain for all his hard work and tolerance in collaborating with me to make this music happen. None of this was actually planned to happen the way it has from the outset, we kind of accidentally started making songs together and rest evolved from there. It has been exciting in the sense that with Alex I both connect with his creativity as well as juxtapose it with opposite directions and approaches. Some very unique compositional challenges arose because of this, and it was a lot of fun to work things out with Alex so that we were both happy with what you hear.
It’s almost a little sad to be calling it a day once the work is over, but time to finish other things! Alex and I may return to fun and games down the track, but for now enjoy the best of what we’ve done so far.
Stay tuned for updates on various promoting of the project around the web 2.0 world, as well as information on how you can purchase a FLAC version of the album.

A little xmas gift for you all before we wind up business for the year! This is a preview of an album project Alex Strain and I have coming out early 2009. We both though that we’d honour the spirit of the season and offer you all a fun free gift that’s a little more on the lighter side of the project, just for a smile.

The middle section features local hiphop sensation and web2.0 megastar MC Wrap Present.

Enjoy.

Strain Jam

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Alex Strain paid a visit to Galloway Street to meet me in person for the first time and set to the task of sorting production issues and having a little sonic fun. Much delight was had with his new toy: the Yamaha CS-30 synth. For someone who works probably too much in the digital audio world to hear this heavy bit of kit producing sounds of of this world via strictly analogue processing was fresh to the ears. Recent fascination with FM matrix routing meant we conducted an experiment in Frequency Modulated routing and noise modelling. We recorded a bit of it which you can hear here:

The Amazing Analogue FM Journey

Alex and I are hard at work with a few more tunes which upon completion will herald the release of a new ‘collaboration website’ to showcase our work. We have quite a few tasty treats on the boil! As always stay tuned…

uneasy

Download mp3: Uneasy

During an atmospheric rainy evening a few months ago Alex Strain messaged me saying he was in the mood for jamming melody. He sent me a little snippet of reflective notes, moving freely through quiet and dark introspection. It got suggested immediately that we should stay up late swapping the tune, each taking a turn to write more of it in collaboration. So for the following five hours we did exactly that.

After about 8 swaps we had formed a little structure that worked on it’s own. Throughout I added some bass and background synths to swirl around Alex’s Wurlitzer jam. No drums were needed, we just kept it as free flowing as possible. Alex added the first spoken sample, a noisey gltiched transmission of a dark dream, so I decided to mirror a similar contribution at the end of the bridge which is equally dreamy. Introspections of a character in a film that doesn’t exist, this is the uneasy moment.

I’m particularly fond of the end build, which was derived out of repeating Alex’s last phrase over and over, ramping the dynamics. It came time to retire the swapping, and in the following days a few edits were done to tidy up (including some rendering-down tricks with the reversal sound in the bridge). And then for a long time it sat on our hard drives, forgotten as we got on with other projects. Until now.

This masted version is one of a series of songs in collaboration with Alex. This began with Phoebe, and will continue with other tracks like ‘The 4th’. We’re aiming for a body of work, much like an album, that documents these sonic meeting places which neither of us can achieve just on our own. Many of the synths and techniques are similar across all this work. Uneasy serves as a possible transition piece.

I’ve mastered this track as a dark cinematic piece, so it requires slightly different listening to regular pop or beat-driven music. Again you may need to bring the volume up to dive into the ripples and eddies of the listening experience.

Winter Update 07

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Firstly, apologies must be expressed for the large gap of not posting. Busy times have prevented the time and headspace to appear to sit down and recap all that is happening. A summary is in order which is provided below. No official releases have been made, but many are on their way.

Winter this year has been particularly bitter, it being said that it was the coldest we’ve had in about 17 years. Why is this significant? Cold outdoors is never really a problem – it’s when it’s that cold inside that you’re aching and you find it eroding your confidence for doing anything but keeping warm. So several disciplines were neglected making it hard to summon the zap necessary to work on music. Added to this I had long periods of waiting for computer dramas to be sorted. It was an unexpected slog and now I’m not so sure I want to fantasise about another Armidale winter like I did years ago. August’s warmth and wattle bloom has been very welcome. Recent trips out to outback Queensland (e.g. Quilpie) have shown me a new world to consider. Although the heat out there might kill me. For now I’m still here.

The studio computer, ala The Magical Black Box of Doom, is now back on it’s healthy legs again. Not only did the hardware have to be rebuilt from scratch to accommodate the replacement motherboard, I had to also rebuild the operating system from ground up. This was a headache that lasted a few weeks and still isn’t completely sorted. I’m very happy to be up and working again after about 6 months of downtime, the longest stretch of time since I was young where I’ve not been composing. I’ve since been playing catch-up, both on pressing projects, as well as old ones slowly burning away in the background… However, I’m not as happy with this new motherboard compared to the old one – there are odd little glitches here and there. So far they have not interrupted with recording, and I’m not fazed enough to pursue an expensive smoother solution.

Composing has been random and focussed on getting a feel for the various projects I left back in Summer. A lot of this has involved finding my mojo again with playing the guitar, which got neglected as much as the composing did. Some heavy practice has been welcome. The guitar playing was especially necessary for an untitled project with Pilot 7 – a tense electro-stomper now being close to completion. The over-the-top guitar part has now been laid down, along with some spontaneous spoken word in theme with the heat of the track. A few tweaks and mastering will see this track public soon.

The other song that has seen major work done to it is a collaboration with Alexstrain called The 4th. The beautiful little piece has needed some rather dynamic and expressive vocals on my part. This has been a challenge for someone who is out of practice. Nevertheless Alex and I are deliberately being picky over the matter and working on crafting the best vocals possible. My feeling with this song is that once it is complete it will serve to be one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever been involved with. Part of the general excitement Alex and I are sharing over this growing body of songs.

Other things that are in the works are some long needed remixes of 2 Smargaid Maerd material; some even older restorations of songs Student X and Growing Old; a cover of The Cure’s A Forest; Paradox tracks Digital Geekboy, Codec, 404 Not Found and Berarngutta; major work on The Malnoia Project’s Outrofonty; and due to this amazing tool some merged work on Corporate Whore Pt.2 from the sluggish Requiem For Subordination project. Also, some soundscape guitar pieces are evolving nicely into a collection of their own…

As mentioned previously, singing has been again presenting itself as a challenge for me, especially now that I have the right gear to capture vocals properly. So I am going to do something about this like I did in 2004 with Naomi: get singing lessons. This time I’m going to try out well respected local theatre personality Ruth Strut to see if we can’t narrow down onto some disciplines to unlock my unpredictability. I begin tomorrow!

My abilities with mixing and mastering are starting to earn me some more attention. So as an initiative to get some more pocket money I’ve decided to offer my services commercially. The blurb runs thusly:

Needing an audio geek to mix or master your music? Got the ideas but not the time or skill to have that song sounding world class? Have your work polished by someone who is sensitive to sonic fidelity, and the need for presence and punch. Get in contact with me, send me a message – I’m happy to discuss your needs and demands to deliver a fantastic result.
Need some vocals or voice recorded? I offer affordable rates with the added convenience of doing it local. A professional quality recording is guaranteed using the best in tube and solid-state processing.

- I’ll be dressing up some of this website to better spruke this service… One project I have already done is a wonderful instrumental track by Carmazine called My Little Underwater Strawberry.

For a long time now I’ve been pondering the possibilities of getting a new guitar, specifically a new electric guitar. Having a look around for a dream setup involving a floyd-rose, sustainer and quality electronics has seen no solution present itself. However, the itch was still there. So, I decided to make the guys happy at Black Dot Music by buying a 6 string steel acoustic guitar. It’s something I’ve actually needed for a long time, ever since my jazz guitar got stolen years ago. The Tanglewood has nice tone and sustain for an entry level guitar. I’m pleased to have it, because I’ve got a knack for composing on 6 string accoustics, possibly due to the musical simplicity of the instrument. Here we go:the axe!

Gotye continues to inspire. We saw him live recently – there’s something very amazing about his combination of stage shyness and sheer musical talent. The reliance on the backing track was the only drawback. If it has not been stated earlier I’ll state it here: Gotye has been a big motivator recently in ‘keeping at it’ with my own commercial projects, particularly The Paradox.

My friend Mykie under the guise of kwhyetteSmartdust on Deviant Art has recently stepped things up a gear in going public with his prolific visual art. I was hanging around with him lots during 2004 at the radio station exploring his DJ-invention of ‘arc music’ – laying many tracks on top of each other live to create a dense, surreal and futuristic soundfield. His visual art matches that approach in many ways, and deals with futurism and dreamtime. Do go check it out and leave him a comment or 49.

New Music from Alex Strain

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

Phoebe collaborator Alex Strain has some new electronic music on offer. This time I have had some passive involvement in the form of going back to some static musical ideas generated in 2004 and offering them to Alex to mutate to his liking. He picked up on one particular chord set, a descending manic pizzicato with paradoxical child-like playfulness. He pretty much made the tune his own, and the results you can get here:

corn7.36-d

The title is somewhat a joke and in full keeping with the idm-inspired instrumental-title-format fashions of the last 10 years. Also, did you know that Corn has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever?

Other than that do check out another new song entirely done by Alex: Effective – a wonderful example of his sensitivities and imagination.

Phoebe – New song with Alex Strain

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

About 3 months back Alex Strain, a breakcore composer from Sydney contacted me about mixing one of his tunes. Fascinated with the alien complexity of the beats I accidentally heard a dub style bass-line in my head that seemed to go with the beats. I built the bass into the altered mix and sent it back to Alex. He liked the vibe and suggested that we do a co-op and finish the song together. He fleshed out the first section of the song and sent it to me for my attention. We roughly planned to have Alex do the first and last sections while I do the middle.

With motives I’m still unclear about, I decided to hand back my additions in the form of something that would be difficult for Alex to work with. His breakcore had no easy musical linkage with the epic dreamy dub I provided, some six to seven minutes of it. He took to the challenge impressively, changing tack with the song structure and weaving the breakcore around the dub themes. I took the mix back and did some final polishing as well as adding some vocals. The vocal process was easier than ever due to the synchronised recording feature of the new version of Renoise (specifically 1.8 beta 5).

The mastering process was also an evolution as well. I was lucky enough to have Simon’s attention on the song. He recommended some tools and approaches to mastering the sound which I’ve currently taken to and found good results.

The end product is a rather ambitious 9 minute piece detailing the meeting points of dub and breakcore. It’s no easy marriage, but hopefully we make a good case for flexibility in sonic presentation. The lessons learnt here will be beneficial for future projects. The song can be obtained here:

Recent focus on composing has gone up a few notches – I’ve got 2 new non-lyric demos I’m experimenting with; a certain introductory Requiem For Subordination track is sounding evolved; plus a conclusive Paradox track is going through the motions of revealing what degree of ‘country-esq’ colouring is appropriate. The new version of Renoise is opening creative doors.

An aside: here is an interesting article about the live music scene and where it’s headed – http://fusionanomaly.net/automagickdj.html
